6A-Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends
1. Regulatory Change: “Taxes 2019: When to file and what big changes to expect” by Janna Herron and Susan Tompor
https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2019/01/25/taxes-new-tax-laws-2019-filing/2665985002/
This article states that many people will experience difficulties when filing their 2018 taxes this year because over 600 changes have been made to the Federal Income Tax rules. An opportunity exists because there will be a learning curve for all people filing their income tax this year. Any person filing their income tax would find the opportunity useful. I believe this opportunity would be relatively difficult to exploit. This is because over 600 changed is quite drastic. I believe that any person filing their 2018 taxes will have questions. I saw this opportunity because this is the first year I will be filing my taxes on my own.
2. Regulatory Change: “Canada's chronic shortage of legal cannabis expected to drag out for years” written by Peter Armstrong
https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/canada-cannabis-shortage-years-1.4988195
Canada is facing a shortage of Marijuana to sell in their newly legal government regulated dispensaries. The shortage is expected to last until 2022. This is an issue facing the Canadian government because they rolled out their plan for federally legal marijuana without a realistic account of the amount of Canadians who use marijuana. This has forced many of the federally legal dispensaries to close shop because of no inventory. This information leads me to believe that an opportunity exists within the Marijuana industry in Canada. People interested in this opportunity would be the suppliers (growers who provide Medical grade Marijuana to the Canadian government). This opportunity is easier to exploit because the growers contracted to the Canadian government are merely lacking in supply. In return, this leads buyers back to their black market marijuana dealers which defeats Canada's main purpose of legalization. I was living in Montreal, Quebec this fall when Marijuana became federally legal in Canada. Nationwide, dispensaries are forced to close their doors because of the lack of supply.
3. Economic Change: “BACK STORY; China's weakening economy spurs global slowdown
fears; U.S. trade war and other woes lead to worries that things will worsen” by Robyn Dixon

The article states that China’s economy is plummeting. According to Dixon, China’s housing construction, car sales, Apple sales, foreign investment, and current job market are all indications that China’s economy is plummeting. The U.S. trade war is said to be a large part of this decline. The opportunity lies in that China has one of the largest economies, and with the right moves, could get their economy back on track. The opportunity exists because this decline is affecting economies all over the world because many rely on China to purchase goods from global manufacturers. I believe it would be more difficult to exploit this opportunity but it will happen because China is a global superpower whose GDP is widely important. This opportunity sparked my interest because of the US-China trade war.
4. Economic Change: “As government shutdown drags on, so, too, will drag on U.S. economy”

4. Economic Change: “As government shutdown drags on, so, too, will drag on U.S. economy”
by Rachel Layne
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/as-government-shutdown-drags-on-so-too-will-drag-on-u-s-economy/
The article states that the longer the partial government shutdown goes on, the more GDP growth will slow down. Layne states that the growth could hit zero if the shutdown continues. The customer for this opportunity is one who is affected by the government shutdown but is still required to work. This opportunity is difficult to exploit because the government has been halted and without Americans receiving pay for their work, morale in the US is low. Most likely, the customer for this opportunity will be one who disagrees with the shutdown. There is also no telling when the government shutdown will be over, which also creates uncertainty for the economy. I saw this opportunity because this has been the longest government shutdown in history, and has sparked a lot of controversy within the US. This opportunity would be easier to exploit because of the serious economic stress the shutdown is putting the United States and its citizens under.
Hi Ayla,
ReplyDeleteI thought the article on the marijuana shortage in Canada was very interesting. That is crazy the lack of supply is being able to shut down companies across Canada. I think medicinal marijuana is becoming very popular these days and it is so weird that we have a Knox here in Gainesville, FL where people can purchase medical marijuana amounts at a high price. Overall the government shutdown article that you shared can relate to the marijuana business because there has been outrageous profits in the weed industry and that can contribute to the national debt to help resolve this government crisis.
Hi Ayla,
ReplyDeleteI really liked reading about all of the opportunities that you found in both the economic and regulatory trends. I found the article about the United State's government shutdown and its hurtful effect on the economy to be very concerning. I agree that this opportunity certainly exists given the significance that Americans place on maintaining a job and steady income. I also think that the worse of an impact the shutdown has on the economy, the easier the opportunity will be to exploit.
