Assignment 2A - Bug List
1. When people at the grocery store ask for a single item to be placed in a bag.
WHY it exists: Many people still don't understand the ramifications of using single use plastics so they use them like theres no tomorrow.
2. When people are texting/browsing the internet on their cell phones and not watching where they’re walking.
WHY it exists: Many people are completely reliable on their phones and it trances them to another dimension to where they seemingly don't know where to walk.
3. Catching every single red light on Union St. downtown going towards Arlington Expressway.
WHY it exists: Either the lights on Union St. are all green, or they’re all red.
4. The lack of parking available at The Fresh Market in Brooklyn, Jacksonville (my employer).
WHY it exists: There are too many restaurants in the business park meaning that around lunch and dinner time people have to park blocks away in order to get a spot.
5. When you’ve ordered a package on Amazon and already been given a time frame for the expected date of delivery, but receive an email days later which states the shipping was delayed.
WHY it exists: There’s no way to tell if a seller will be delayed with the shipping of your package until you've already placed the order. All one can go by is the sellers rating and hope for the best.
6. When people don’t use their blinker when driving.
WHY it exists: Many people consider speeding up and then getting over to be an appropriate way to indicate they’re going to “get over”.
7. Many people come to The Fresh Market to eat lunch, since it is surrounded by a business park. Fresh Market has no recycling to accommodate their employees and others eating and drinking their lunches at The Fresh Market.
WHY it exists: Possibly not enough money/ something that needs to be approved by corporate.
8. My neighborhood coffee shop, Bold Bean, has not yet started to offer paper straws as an option.
WHY it exists: Either the issue of one use plastic straws hasn't been brought to their attention, or they are unaware that many other local coffee shops have already made the switch from plastic to paper. Many also now have stainless steel straws for purchase at the front.
9.When my dogs leash get stuck under his arm.
WHY it exists: Depending on how he’s walking/peeing/stepping his leash usually gets caught underneath his arm and we have to stop so I can fix it.
10. People who obnoxiously rev their engines.
WHY it exists: Some people like to have muscle cars, and revving ones engine seems to be one of the main purposes of a muscle car.
11. When my bluetooth headphones die while I’m working out.
WHY it exists: The battery in my headphones has progressively gotten worse and they barely hold a charge anymore.
12. When the Brita in my fridge is empty.
WHY it exists: Someone may forget or either be too lazy to fill the Brita back up after finishing the last of the filtered water.
13.When a restaurant has little to no vegetarian options.
WHY it exists: Many people in the south are still accustomed to a meat based lifestyle which in return means many restaurants don't serve quality vegetarian food.
14. Group project members who don't pull their weight.
WHY it exists: Lazy people who try to loaf off their teammates instead of doing their fair share of work.
15. The laundry doors on my machines are backwards which makes it difficult to transfer the laundry from the washer to the dryer properly without clothes falling to the floor.
WHY it exists: The man who fixed the leak behind my washer put the dryer and washer back in opposite places which now makes the doors open up into one another.
16. My car wont let a consistent flow of gas into the tank, meaning it constantly stops and clicks the pump forcing me to pump over and over again for a very minimal amount of gas.
WHY it exists: The gas indicator on my car is broken.
17. When the Coke icee machine at the 711 on Riverside avenue is broken.
WHY it exists: Coke is a very popular icee flavor so the machine tends to break a lot because of how much it is used by customers.
18. Apple sending me updates constantly.
WHY it exists: Apple wants their customers to “upgrade” aka pay for Icloud.
19. When I receive a call from a seemingly local number and its spam.
WHY it exists: My phone number is on many spam lists from things I signed up for when I was younger.
20. The constant construction in downtown Jacksonville.
WHY it exists: Jacksonville is very spread out and the City is constantly trying to improve its infrastructure.
Reflection: Ultimately, I found this assignment to be rather easy because there are many things that bug
me from day to day. Over the course of four days I jotted down annoyances I ran into while at work, driving,
and running errands. Although I had no problem coming up with the inconveniences I face in day to day life,
I did find this to be a useful problem solving exercise.

Hi Ayla. I enjoyed reading your twenty bugs list and we have some things in common. Your list is interesting and diverse and opens the reader's mind to other ideas. I like the ideas about recycling near Fresh Market since so many people eat there. It seems like a great opportunity. I also liked the spam bug as seems to be a problem for many people. Unlike you, I found looking for "bugs" was challenging but I do agree that it was a great exploration exercise in learning how to identify problems that need to be solved and to further think about how one can solve those problems for a lot of people. By the way, Jacksonville is my home town.

ReplyDeleteI love reading your bug list. It includes so many daily things and many of them are talking about the car. Your bug list has given me some new ideas about the bug around me. On your reflection, you said the bug list is easy for you, but it is a really difficult task for me. I have to spend a lot of time on this assignment. Great response!
